Moulder ousted following four losing seasons

Racer baseball Head Coach Kevin Moulder will not return next season, Murray State Director of Athletics Allen Ward announced Friday.

Murray State baseball’s season ended last week, having been eliminated by Eastern Kentucky 13-6 in the second round of the OVC tournament. The Racers finished the season with an overall record of 27-29 and 13-16 in the OVC.

“I appreciate Kevin’s efforts to move the program forward,” Ward said in a press release. “We’ve made some progress the past four years.  However, after evaluating all aspects of the baseball program, I’ve determined a change will benefit the overall direction, consistency, and culture I expect and our student-athletes deserve.”

In four seasons as the head coach, Moulder compiled a record of 99-128 while holding a conference record of 54-65. He never once had a winning season in his four years with the program, although the Racers can boast back-to-back trips to the OVC tournament.

Despite Murray State’s record this season, they had a few bright spots, as sophomore third baseman Davis Sims, graduate student outfielder Brandon Gutzler and freshman second baseman Grant Wood all received OVC accolades.

Sims and Gutzler were named to the All-OVC second team, while Wood headlined the OVC All-Rookie team after being named the OVC Freshman of the Year.

With the Moulder era concluding, Racer baseball will now look to add to the promising talent pool and team comradery that Moulder leaves behind.

“I fully expect new leadership to embrace what Murray State has to offer and strategically make decisions that are in our long-term best interest,” Ward said. “I’m committed to ensuring the baseball program is positively moving forward.”

The search for a new head coach will begin immediately.
