Murray Police Department arrested a 19-year-old from Wisconsin after investigating an active shooter and bomb threat against Murray High School.

Detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Kya Nelson for two counts of terroristic threatening in the second degree and one count of terroristic threatening in the first degree.

“Detectives traveled to Racine, Wisconsin, and on Friday, Jan. 29, at approximately 7 a.m. they assisted with the execution of a search warrant at Mr. Nelson’s residence,” according to the press release sent by the MPD.

On Monday, Jan. 25, the MPD responded to a report of shots fired at Murray High School and to a bomb threat on Tuesday, Jan. 26. According to the press release, both reports were false and no real danger existed at the school.

Nelson is being held in the Racine County Jail and is awaiting extradition to Kentucky, according to the press release.

“I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the local law enforcement, the several agencies involved in bringing this matter to a close,” Superintendent Coy Samons said during a press conference. “I’ve stated a couple times earlier in the week: we’re very fortunate to be in Murray and to be in the capable hands of the law enforcement here, state and federal agencies as well.”

Chiefs Jeff Liles from the MPD said it was an exciting day in Murray during the press conference.

“[The authorities have done] an outstanding job,” Liles said. “They’ve been working, staying around the clock, and it all came to light this morning around 7 a.m. when we put this individual in custody. This is what it’s all about. We have a great community. We care about our community and we care about our students and everything.”
