Consistency plagued the Racers over the weekend as Murray State women’s golf finished in third place in the Jan Weaver Invitational at Miller Memorial Golf Course in Murray.
Head Coach Velvet Milkman believes playing at home caused a disadvantage for her team this time around.
“There’s a little bit of pressure when you’re playing at home,” Milkman said. “I think this team didn’t handle that as well as they’d like, but overall it was a good tournament for OVC preparation.”
Murray State held a two-shot lead over Eastern Kentucky and a five-shot lead over Rutgers University heading into the final round. Despite a solid two-round total of 285-300, a final round score of 307 left the Racers in third at the end of Day Two on Saturday, April 6.
EKU took home first place honors, shooting three-round scores of 294-293-297?884 thanks to EKU senior Elsa Moberly’s first-place finish on scores of 70-68-73?211.
Murray State had two players finish in the top three as senior Anna Moore, from Hopkinsville, Kentucky, finished in second place and senior Linette Holmslykke, from Vejle, Denmark, finished in third place.
Moore shot three-round totals of 70-71-75?216 while Holmslykke finished with scores of 69-73-75?217.
Senior Jane Watts, from Versailles, Kentucky, had another strong tournament, finishing tied for 16th place on scores of 70-75-82?227 following a share of 24th place in the John Kirk-Panther Intercollegiate on Tuesday, April 2.
Milkman says her team will prepare for the OVC Championship the same way as any other tournament.
“Preparation won’t change this week,” Milkman said. “Where we’re playing, the greens are a little different, so putting will be something we practice throughout the week.”
Murray State will be back in action Monday, April 15, as its looks to capture its third-consecutive OVC Championship at Schoolmaster Golf Course in Muscle Shoals, Alaba
