Staff Report
All Greek social activities for both sororities and fraternities have been suspended indefinitely as of May 9.
President Bob Davies and Vice President for Student Affairs, Don Robertson sent a letter informing the Greek community of this decision.
According to the letter, the mission of the office of Greek Life is to promote an atmosphere where students excel in areas of leadership, scholarship, service and philanthropy and social advancement.
The decision was based on national trends and the University’s review of reports including Greek activities with the implementation and enforcement of the Greek Social Event Policy.
“A University committee will conduct a thorough investigation of current policies and procedures governing Greek activities to provide a safe environment for all,” the letter read. “The committee, consisting of representatives from the University and Greek community, will begin their work during the summer and continue until a thorough review occurs and appropriate recommendations and procedures are submitted to the Office of Student Affairs.”
Until the review is complete, no social events will occur, and it may extend into the fall semester of 2018.
Chapters in violation of the Greek Social Event policy will be placed on immediate cease-and-desist of all other chapter operations, according to the letter.
“Please remember that this suspension is not intended as a punishment, but rather a time for you to focus on philanthropic initiatives, membership education and the principles and values in which your organizations were founded,” the letter read.
The Greek Social Event policy states the following criteria must be met for an event to be considered social in nature:
- The number of non-members is greater than the amount of members
- A guest list is utilized
- A perceived chapter event, whether located on chapter premises or any other location that does not involve a third party vendor;
- Alcohol is present or may be consumed by attendees of the event.
