Golf one shot off lead at Drake Creek

The Murray State women’s golf team set themselves up for a battle with Central Arkansas when the final round of the fourth annual Drake Creek invitational is played Tuesday morning at Drake Creek Golf Club in Ledbetter, Ky.

The Racers, who have won two of the previous three Drake Creek titles including last season, put together rounds of 302-298=600 and trailed the Bears (306-293=599) by one shot, while Arkansas State (601), Belmont (601) and Columbia (606) made up the top-5.

MSU’s Alexandra Lennartsson and Delaney Howson paced the Racers as they shared sixth place in the field of 58 competitors. Lennartsson had rounds of 73-75=148, while Howson turned in scores of 75-73=148. Alli Weaver was in 13th place with scores of 77-73=150, while Abbi Stamper held 23rd place after scores of 77-77=154. Sophie Hillier was in 49th place with rounds of 83-84=167.

Southern Illinois (613) had sixth place, while the rest of the field included Austin Peay (619), Drake (631), Northern Iowa (632), Jackson State (344-322=666) and Tennessee State (395-384=779).

Gina Nuzzo and Ashlyn Bechtold are playing the event for the Racers as individuals. Nuzzo had scores of 81-79=160 for a spot in 34th place, while Bechtold was in 50th position with rounds of 87-81=168.

Belmont’s Shay Sullivan (72-72=144) had a one-shot lead on Central Arkansas’ Anna Carling (72-73=145) for the medalist honor.

The final 18 holes of the event is Tuesday morning at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start.

The Drake Creek course is playing to a par-72 and 6,178 yards for the field of 11 teams.
