In compliance with CDC regulations and Gov. Andy Beshear’s recommendations, Murray State’s annual Family Weekend event will be held virtually from Sept. 11-12.

Murray State Director of Student Engagement and Success Peggy Whaley expressed her excitement to welcome Racer families for a visit, even if campus activities will be limited for the fall semester.

“The health and safety of our campus community is important to us, and we think our families will greatly enjoy the virtual event this year,” Whaley said. “We look forward to hosting Family Weekend in September.”

To compensate for the constraints posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Whaley and her team plan for Family Weekend by opening up virtual activities including the following:

  • A “Bring your Family along” scavenger hunt, which encourages students on campus to connect with their at-home and Racer families for entries to win Murray State gear,
  • The “Racer Family Rewind” video challenge, where participants recreate old family photos and post on social media using the #RacerFamilyRewind hashtag,
  • A “Racer Recipes” series that features a variety of community-submitted recipes for all cooking skill levels,
  • A “Racer One Facebook Event” featuring a Q&A with Murray State’s famous mascot and student rider,
  • Murray State coloring sheets for those looking to flex their artistic muscles,
  • A canned food and toiletries drive to help stock the University’s Racers Helping Racers pantry and other local charities.

While Racer families are still permitted to visit on campus, the typical events for Family Weekend have been reduced dramatically. On-campus tours and visits in the Curris Center will still be available, but the festivities, such as last year’s Racer 5k and Fall Fanfare Concert, will be limited. The University will continue a Family Weekend tradition of honoring outstanding families from each Residential College.
