Rifle caps off fall season with Ole Miss win

Murray State rifle will head into its winter break with heads held high after posting 4692 points to win against the University of Mississippi’s 4650 points on Saturday, Nov. 17.

The Racers returned their senior shooter Mackenzie Martin from international competition on Saturday, and she picked up right where she left off. Martin finished second by one point in individual aggregate with 1178 points. Her teammate, senior Barbara Schläpfer, ended the match first in individual aggregate with 1179 points.

Schläpfer has led all shooters in individual aggregate for six-consecutive matches for Murray State. Martin and Schläpfer swapped first and second place in smallbore and air rifle. Martin ended the match first in smallbore with 586 points, while Schläpfer finished with 583 points. As for air rifle, Schläpfer scored the highest of all shooters with 596 points and Martin scored 592 points.

It was a three-way tie for fourth place in individual aggregate scores. Racer junior Shelby Huber, sophomore Dana Buesseler, and Ole Miss sophomore Abby Buesseler finished with an individual aggregate score of 1164 points.

The Buesseler sisters matched one another in both air rifle and smallbore. They finished with 578 points in smallbore and 586 points in air rifle. Huber ended with a 580 in smallbore and 584 points in air rifle.

Murray State will have some time off to train and finish the fall semester before hitting the road to Jacksonville State University to begin its slate of matches in 2019. The Racers will shoot against the Gamecocks at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 19, in Jacksonville, Alabama.
