The Murray State football team has recorded its best start in the OVC in nearly 20 years, thanks in part to consistent execution on both sides of the ball.

Three straight years of losing seasons overshadowed the success of senior linebacker Quincy Williams and his defense. This season, Williams has outplayed every opponent, leading the Football Championship Subdivision in solo tackles going into week eight with 59.

Williams attributes his success to sticking to the team’s game plan and completing the task at hand.

“I’m just doing my ‘one-eleven,’” Williams said. “There’s eleven people on the field and I got one job. Coaches bring the calls and I just execute to my best ability. I don’t really think about stats or anything like that, I just make the plays presented in front of me.”

From offense to defense, and even special teams, the Racers have a team effort worthy of attention this season. With success stemming from each side of the ball, it’s easy to miss the individuals that shine the brightest.

Along with leading the FCS in solo tackles, Williams’ 59 solo tackles ranks fifth in FBS rankings. Williams has 82 total tackles and one sack.

He shares a team-high two interceptions with fellow sophomore linebacker Anthony Koclanakis and freshman defensive back Quinaz Turner.

As Williams continues to take a week-by-week approach, the preparation stays constant.

“We prepare the same every week,” Williams said. “We go in as if we’re playing the best team in the nation and we don’t take anyone lightly.”

Going forward, Williams hopes to bring a stricter approach when leading defense.

“One of the little things for us will be getting off the field on third down,” Williams said. “We’ve gotta stop the big play drives, cut out penalties and offensive wise, we gotta keep them on the field.”

Williams will look to maintain his hold on the solo tackles lead going into a matchup with Tennessee Tech at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3, at Tucker Stadium.
