Senior goalkeeper Alex Steigerwald achieved the record for most shutouts in Murray State history during a 2-0 victory over Morehead University.
The Racers were able to pick up another win despite being down multiple starters still. Head Coach Matt Lodge was proud of his players ability to make plays in the face of adversity.
“It was one of those games where we needed some people to step up, and I think every person I put on the field did their job,” Lodge said. “Overall, everyone stepped up; it was a good game to watch.”
Sophomore forward Rebecca Kubin gave the Racers the lead in the first half when Morehead State’s backline mishandled a ball in the 24th minute. The ball found Kubin’s feet and she placed in right between the keeper’s legs.
Murray State went on to control the first half with its lead, allowing only two shots from Morehead in the entire half.
In the second half, Kubin made a run from midfield with the ball and weaved around the Eagles’ defenders to find herself in the box. Kubin slotted her second goal of the day, shooting near post and beating the keeper for a second time.
Morehead State took more shots in the second half, yet were still unable to find the back of the net, ending the day with only three shots on goal. Steigerwald was there for all three shots on goal to cap off the day with three saves to break the all-time shutout record.
“I think the biggest factor every year has been the defense we’ve had,” Steigerwald said. “The talent we’ve had has been awesome and they have really helped me in achieving that.”
Murray State, 11-3-1 (7-2), will play its final regular season game against Eastern Kentucky University at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 21 at Cutchin Field.
