University of Tennessee at Martin’s women’s soccer team used two first-half goals to grab the No. 1 spot in the OVC by beating the Racers 3-1 on Friday.

The first half was controlled by the Skyhawks who began scoring at the 21st minute with a goal from freshman midfielder Skylor Keane.

UT Martin doubled its lead right before the end of the first half with a goal from senior forward Danae Kalariou. The Racers could only muster four shots in the first half, which is their lowest mark for a first half in an OVC game this year.

Murray State was awarded a penalty kick two minutes into the second half. Freshman forward Abby Jones stepped up and found the back of the net to cut the lead in half, making the score 2-1.

The Skyhawks put the game to bed in the 83rd minute after a dagger from senior midfielder Amy McGivern, making the final score 3-1.

Murray State was out-shot by UT Martin, which averages the seventh-most shots per game for division one schools . The Skyhawks were just under their 20-shot average with 19 shots on the day, which was seven more than the Racers.

Murray State, now 8-3-1 (4-2), will play their next game against Austin Peay State University at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 12, in Clarksville, Tennessee.
