The first trailer for Marvel Studios’ upcoming film “Captain Marvel” debuted Sept. 18, 2018, on “Good Morning America.” The trailer doesn’t delve deep into the overall plot, but it does show off a good majority of the characters and give an idea of what the story could be. Here are the biggest takeaways from the teaser.

Welcome to the 90’s

“Captain Marvel” doesn’t pick up after the last film in the MCU, as the releases have usually been, but is instead a prequel film set in the 1990s. Right from the start, the trailer lets viewers know the film is set in the past when Carol Danvers, a.k.a. Captain Marvel, crashes into a Blockbuster Video store.

Scattered Memories

In the trailer, Carol Danvers explains to Nick Fury how she has flashbacks to memories of a life she may have had on Earth, and that she doesn’t know if they’re real or not. The memories shown include Danvers as a little girl, her time as an Air Force pilot, and the aftermath of some sort of explosion that appears to give Carol her powers. The trailer also shows Carol trapped by a machine that could possibly be implanting those memories in her head, which adds even more mystery as to whether or not they happened.

Returning Characters

Some established characters from the MCU will be making appearances in this film, most notably Nick Fury in his pre-S.H.I.E.L.D. director days. In this point in the MCU timeline, he has both eyes and hasn’t encountered anything supernatural (or “from above,” as he describes it). This actually adds more meaning to the after credits scene of the first “Iron Man,” where Fury tells Tony Stark that he’s “become part of a bigger universe,” as this film is Fury first being exposed to that “bigger universe.” Agent Phil Coulson is returning to the big screen for the first time since “The Avengers,” though he can be found on the “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” TV series.

Skrulls

The trailer gives a quick glimpse of the green-skinned aliens known as Skrulls. In the comics, the Skrulls are known to have the ability to mimic the appearance of anyone and anything they choose, meaning they could blend into society and nobody would even notice. This explains why Captain Marvel decides to punch a seemingly innocent old woman on a bus, as she could very well be a Skrull.

The Pager

There’s a quick scene of Nick Fury using a pager to message someone. This could very well be the same pager Fury would use to contact Captain Marvel before turning to dust in the after credits scene of “Avengers: Infinity War.” The only difference is that the pager used in that film looked more modified with hi-tech gadgetry, where the one in this trailer looks more ordinary. Or maybe it is the same pager, but it would be upgraded at some point in the future.
