Murray State added non -conference win to their season against IUPUI in a overpowering 3-0 victory.

Junior forward Miyah Watford was able to open the scoring sheet with a pass off a good run from sophomore  forward Reagan Pittenger. The Racers have keyed in on applying pressure in the season so far, and this game was more of the same for the Racers. They applied pressure and were able to build an early lead against the IUPUI Jaguars.

“I am a big pressing fan, I like to watch teams that press,” Head Coach Matt Lodge said. “I think we got players who can build, but at the same time we have players who are so dangerous going forward that if we win it in forward areas already, we are gonna get right after it.”

The first half saw another goal from Watford, this time off a pass from Freshman forward Abby Jones to make it a 2-0 game. Jones and Watford have combined for all six of the Racers goals this season, and sophomore forward Rebecca Kubin has had plenty of opportunities in the attacking third.

“Only two of them right now are scoring, but Becca is right there,” Lodge said.. “My challenge this week is to be more clinical, and they answered that. We even missed a Penalty and we still scored three goals.”

The Racers lost a crucial piece of their offense from season with career-goals record holder Harriet Withers graduating. Watford has shown that she is ready to step up her game this year scoring four goals in three games for the Racers.

“We don’t have to rely on one person to score,” Watford said. “If one of us is off we still have two more people that can score, and Emma can come off the bench and score.”

After a solid 3-0 start, Murray State’s next game will be against Ole Miss at 6 p.m. on Sunday, August 26, in Oxford, Mississippi.
