Murray State’s men’s golf team placed eighth in the University of South Florida Invitational in Tampa, Florida this week at the Tampa Palms Golf and Country Club.

The Racers were looking to improve on their 18th-place finish the week prior in the Loyola Intercollegiate in Goodyear, Arizona.

Murray State found themselves in ninth place out of 11 teams after day one, shooting scores of 319 and 312 for a first day total of 631.

Sophomore Justin Wendling from Lithia, Florida lead the way for the Racers on day one with scores of 72 and 81 for 153 and 16th place. Sophomore Avery Edwards was not too far behind his teammate with a 30th place finish after shooting 78 and 79 for 157.

The Racers finished the tournament on a strong note Tuesday by scoring a 309, their best round of the tournament.

Justin Wendling finished the tournament as the highest-placing Racer, shooting a 76 in the third round and securing a spot tied for 18th. Sophomore Austin Knight, from Hopkinsville, Kentucky, dropped just one spot on day two after shooting a 76 for a share of 21st place.

Head Coach Eddie Hunt said he hopes to build off of this performance and add to his team’s game.

“We need more consistency,” Hunt said. “We need to get where we can have five players contribute to the team evenly.”

The Racers travel to Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida next weekend to continue play in the Mission Inn Spring Spectacular at El Campeon Golf Course.
