University buildings damaged from busted pipes

The University’s Facilities Management crew is assessing damage to its main campus after a campus-wide power outage Monday night. By Tuesday afternoon, crews from Facilities Management found significant damage due to frozen pipes and equipment in at least 40 percent of the major buildings on campus.

Catherine Sivills, assistant vice president for communications at Murray State, said it will take a while to make the necessary repairs before the buildings can be occupied.

Kim Oatman, chief Facilities Management officer, said water pipes have also busted in Regents Residential College.

Monday afternoon buildings across Murray State lost power. Later, an unexpected circuit failure caused heating to go out in the residential colleges. The 37 students still living in dorms were without heat for several hoursand later moved to Sid Easley Alumni Center.

Oatman also said the students who were still on campus during the power outage are no longer in the Sid Easley Alumni Center and have been moved back into the residential colleges after powered was restored Tuesday.  Heat and water have also been restored in College Courts.

The main campus will be closed through Wednesday night.
