Cross-country to compete in Illinois

After a week of intense practices, the cross-country teams will compete in the Southern Illinois Saluki Invitational Sept. 21.

So far this season, Head Coach Jenny Severns said both teams have performed to her contentment.

The women are counting on junior Abbie Oliver to continue to lead them in meets. Oliver delivered the fastest time from a Racer this season in last week’s meet at Eastern Illinois. She said she plans on continuing to improve week to week through hard work and concentration.

Competition with herself has been a driving force in the success of Oliver thus far. However, she expresses some friendly competition with her teammate, Brittany Bohn.

“We push each other to be better,” Oliver said. “Where one of us is weak, the other is strong.”

Acting as a captain figure on the women’s team, Oliver carries the responsibility to lead her team.

“[Oliver] has always been one of our go-to girls.” Severns said. “She is dependable in and outside of races.”

Oliver said she hopes to beat her personal record in the upcoming.

For the men, Cole Cisneros has been posting the fastest times, and he said he hopes to continue to do so in this week.

Both teams are being worked extremely hard this week in order to prepare for the approaching invitational.
