Softball sweeps SIU for first time

The Racer softball team won its doubleheader against SIU Edwardsville Sunday.

In the first game of the series, the Racers scored first in the top of the second off of a two-run home run by junior Leslie Bridges to score senior Ellyn Troup.

The next several innings went by without either team scoring until the bottom of the seventh. SIUE scored one run on a groundout to cut the lead in half, but did not score again. Murray State held on to make the final score 2-1. Senior pitcher Shelby Kosmecki earned the win for the Racers.

In the second game, SIUE was first to put a run on the board. The team scored on a single to take the 1-0 lead in the second inning.

Murray State had a big fourth inning to take the lead of the game. Sophomore Alexa Becker scored on a wild pitch to tie the game.

Then, Troup singled and advanced to second on an error by SIUE to score sophomore Casey Castile. The next two batters made outs, but advanced Troup to third base.

Senior Christian Cox singled to the pitcher to allow Troup to score and give the Racers a 3-1 lead.

Both teams’ offenses were quiet through the rest of the game. With the last three innings remaining scoreless, Racers’ pitcher CheyAnne Gaskey the win.

This was the first time Murray State has swept SIUE in program history. By adding two wins to its record, the Racers are now in fourth place in OVC standings.

Murray State’s next game is a doubleheader at home against the University of Memphis. They will play on the new field if it is completed in time. The first game begins at 3 p.m. Wednesday.
