The ‘Breds lost both games of the doubleheader against Canisius College on Sunday afternoon. Though the ‘Breds had the lead at some point in each game, they could not overcome Canisius’s powerful hitters.

Murray State fell 6-5 in the first game and 11-4 in the second.

In both games the ‘Breds got on the board early, scoring one run in the first game and two runs in the second. The team has now scored in the first inning in seven out of eight games.

In the opening game of the doubleheader Murray State recorded its first home run of the season. The designated hitter, junior Brandon Eggenschwiler hit one down the right field line. He brought home base runners freshman Taylor Mathews and senior Ty Stetson. In the first game Eggenschwiler went three for five with two runs and four RBIs. In the second game he went one for two with a run.

In both games the ‘Breds had the lead but could not bring home the win. In the first game, after the three-run homer from Eggenschwiler in the fifth inning, Murray State was winning 4-2. They kept that lead until the seventh inning, where Canisius College took the momentum by bringing home three runs, making the score 5-4.

The ‘Breds tied it up in the eighth inning with another strong offensive play from Eggenschwiler. He singled to left center, earning the RBI as Stetson crossed home plate. With the score tied at 5-5, the teams headed into extra innings. An RBI single from Canisius player Brooklyn Foster gave them the lead which the ‘Breds could not over come.

In the second game Murray State lead 2-0 after the first inning but would never lead after that. The Golden Griffins would put up 11 runs in the next six innings, proving too tough for the ‘Breds.

They tried to rally in the fourth and seventh innings, after putting up one run on the board during each inning, but could not collect on any opportunities. Many innings the ‘Breds would have the bases loaded but could not produce any scores.

The ‘Breds are now 4-7 on the season. They are currently in a four-game losing streak.

The ‘Breds return to play at Johnny Reagan Field 2 p.m. Tuesday as they take on the Southern Illinois Salukis.
