Newcomb to play in Jones Cup

Murray State’s Patrick Newcomb, having played in one of amateur golf’s prestigious winter championships, is set to play in another before joins his teammates for the spring portion of the 2012-13 season.

Newcomb, a senior from Benton, Ky., has been selected to compete in the Jones Cup Invitational (Feb 1-3) in Sea Island, Ga.

The Jones Cup is a 54-hole stroke-play event that is held over three days with 18 holes of play each day.

It is played at Ocean Forest Golf Club, which opened in 1995 and is a Rees Jones design. The course has also hosted such championships as the 1998 Georgia State Amateur, the 1999 Southern Amateur and the 2001 Walker Cup Matches.

Before Christmas, Newcomb was invited to play in the South Beach International Amateur (Dec. 18-21) in Miami, Fla. The Racer senior placed 64th in a field of 74 competitors with scores of 71-71-78-78=298. The South Beach International Amateur was played at Miami Beach Golf Club and Normandy Shores Golf Club.

Newcomb tees off at 8 a.m. CT Friday morning with Thomas Bradshaw and Billy Kennerly.

When Newcomb comes back to MSU after the Jones Cup, he’ll prepare with the Racer team for their spring opener at the Samford Intercollegiate (March 4-5) at Hoover Country Club in Hoover, Ala.
