Powell receives national honor

Murray State wide receiver/kick returner Walter Powell received another national honor on Monday when he was selected to the College Sporting News Fabulous Fifty FCS All-America Team as an all-purpose back. Powell was also a First-Team All-America selection by the Associated Press and The Sports Network.

Powell (St. Louis, Mo.) is coming off a season in which he accumulated 2,123 all-purpose yards. His 193 all-purpose yards ranked second in the FCS this season.

As a receiver, Powell set new MSU single-season records for receptions and yards as he had 94 catches for 1,213 yards and 10 touchdowns. He also set a new school record with six 100-yard receiving games, including a stretch of four-straight games. He ended the season by catching at least one touchdown pass in six of the final seven games.

Powell caught at least seven passes in nine games, including four games with at least 10 catches. He had a career day against UT Martin as he caught 14 passes for 196 yards and three touchdowns.

In the return game, Powell averaged 26.3 yards per kick off return (5th in FCS), and 15.8 yards per punt return(17th in FCS). Powell set an FCS record when her returned a punt 100 yards for a touchdown in the victory over Southeast Missouri. He also returned a punt 71 yards for a touchdown in the victory over Tennessee Tech.
