Men’s tennis plays well over weekend at ITA Regional

The Murray State men’s tennis squad competed over the weekend at the ITA Ohio Valley Regional hosted by Memphis.

Joao Camara advanced the furthest in singles play for the Racers, advancing to the third round of the consolation bracket over the weekend. MSU also got solid doubles play all weekend from all three of its doubles teams.

In his opening round singles match, Camara was defeated by Middle Tennessee State’s Ettore Zito 6-0 and 6-2. Camara would respond in the second round of his consolation match, earning a victory over IUPUI’s Deon Shafer. Camara won the first set 6-3 before Shafer had to withdraw with an injury.

In his third round match against Henrique Norbiato of Belmont, Camara was defeated 6-4, 6-2. Max McLean opened up the singles play for the Racers with the first match of the weekend. McLean was downed by Josh Malyon of Dayton, 6-3, 6-1. In his consolation match, McLean fell against David Salazar of Lipscomb, 6-3 and 6-1.

Tyler Jeffers also lost his first round matchup, losing to Ball State’s Patrick Elliott 6-2 and 6-4. In his first consolation match, Jeffers was defeated by Norbiato as well, 6-3 and 6-3.

Adam Taylor received the only first round victory for Murray State as he defeated Ricardo Pineda of Wright State, 6-2 and 6-1. Taylor then dropped his next match with Louisville’s Adam Wagner, losing 6-1 and 6-1.

In doubles competition, the duo of Jeffers and Taylor won their opening match, defeating Dayton’s Andrew Hanley and Nick Salcedo 8-4. The tandem of Juneau and Tasic of Indiana ended Jeffers and Taylor’s run in the second round with a 8-1 victory.

Aleks and Max Mitric dropped their first round doubles match, losing to Juan Ramirez and Jorge Varon of ETSU 8-0. Lastly, the tandem of McLean and Camara dropped its first doubles match of the weekend, falling to Butler’s Billy Weldon and Austin Woldmoe 8-3.
