Volleyball drops road conference match

Murray State’s first road OVC volleyball contest of the season ended in defeat Saturday afternoon as the Racers fell to Morehead State 3-0. Set scores went 25-17, 29-27 and 25-9.

In set number one, the Racers (3-10, 1-3 OVC) fell behind early on 10-4, but rallied back to cut the deficit to 17-13. Morehead State would end the set on an 8-4 run though to pull out the first set.

Murray State came out firing in set number two and appeared to be in control for most of it and carried a 20-10 advantage late into the set. After an Eagle timeout however, Morehead State stormed back, going on a 14-3 run to tie it at 24-24. Murray State would stave off four Morehead set points, but couldn’t get over the hump against the Eagles.

In set three, the Racers jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead, but after that it was all Morehead State (12-6, 4-0 OVC) as they controlled the final set to take the match and extend their 10-match winning streak.

Taylor Olden led the Racers with 11 kills and also had a block in the match. Wendi Zickfield had five kills to go along with three total blocks in the loss. Kristen Besselsen, Michelle Lazorchak and Alyssa Lelm each had four kills. Lelm led MSU with five blocks in the match, while Besselsen and Lazorchak each had four.

Lia Havili led the Racers with 27 assists. She also recorded eight digs, a block and a service ace. Katlyn Hudson led Murray State with 11 digs and had the Racers’ other ace.

Next up for Murray State, the Racers will host Southern Illinois on Tuesday night at 7 in their final non-conference match. MSU will return to OVC action next weekend for a pair of road matches. MSU will travel to UT Martin on Friday night, while Southeast Missouri will be the opponent on Saturday.
