Racers take third at Cardinal Intercollegiate

The Murray State men’s golf team came home with a third place finish at the Cardinal Intercollegiate hosted by the University of Louisville at the Cardinal Club in Simpsonville, Ky. 

The Racers carded scores of 293-285-290=868 which left them in third place, just one shot behind second place Bowling Green State at 867 and winner Louisville at 858. 

Tyler Brown and Preston French led a group of four MSU players in the top-20. The senior/freshman pair shared 13th place in the field of 84 players, with Brown recording scores of 70-73-74=217 and French at 74-69-74=217. Patrick Newcomb and Hunter York shared 19th place as Newcomb had rounds of 75-73-70=218 and York had scores of 76-70-72=218. Wade Thompson placed 70th with scores of 74-82-78=234. 

After the Racers in third place, the rest of the 14-team field was made up by Arkansas-Little Rock (871), Austin Peay (880), Furman (881), Eastern Kentucky (882), Dayton (883), Francis Marion (883), Western Kentucky (889), Northern Kentucky (892), Marshall (897), Morehead State (911), Cincinnati (917) and Georgetown (KY) (610) rounded out the field. Georgetown did not finish the final round.

 Jordan Smith is competing for the Racers as an individual and was in 36th place with scores of 76-70-77=223.

 “I was very pleased with the way we played this week in putting four of our guys in the top-20,” MSU Head Coach Eddie Hunt said. “I think we showed that we have some depth to our lineup and to be in a strong field like this and finish one shot out of second, that’s a confidence boost for us going into our event next week.”

 The Cardinal Club played to a par of 72 this week and a length of 7,036 yards.

 The Racers are back in action Monday and Tuesday (Oct. 1-2) when they host the MSU Fall Invitational at Miller Memorial Golf Course.
