The Murray State baseball and men’s cross country teams, who were awarded the Ohio Valley Conference Team Academic Achievement Award for the 2011-12 academic year, were honored at halftime of the football game on Saturday at Stewart Stadium.

“I am proud that the hard work our players do in the classroom is acknowledged by the OVC Team Academic Achievement Award,” said head baseball coach Rob McDonald. “This award is also a reflection of the great work our athletics academic staff does.”

The award is presented annually in each conference-sponsored sport to the member institution’s team with the greatest percentage of eligible student-athletes who achieved a 3.25 GPA or higher. In all, the 17 members of the baseball team and five members of cross country were honored by Director of Athletics Allen Ward on Saturday evening.

“I’m proud of our guys for working really hard in the classroom. It’s one of our team goals every year to have the highest GPA in the league and I’m glad that the conference recognizes the team as well for its hard work,” said head cross country coach Jenny Severns.

The Racers had 12 Medal of Honor Winners (given to the student-athlete with highest GPA) and 104 total student-athletes named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll last academic season.
