Founding members reflect

“We needed to get some talent early on,” Pyron said. “We needed people who were versatile, who could play multiple positions. I wanted them all to be a little bit different from each other. If you recruit a bunch of players who are versatile they can play different positions. We didn’t have a third baseman graduating, so we didn’t have to go get a third baseman we just had to go find a bunch of players we could fit together somehow.”

That jigsaw of players worked so well that even in their first season the Racers managed what many would not have dared dream, breaking into the conference tournament in their first season.

“It was amazing how well everyone played together,” said senior utility player Megan Glosser. “It’s hard when you have a bunch of girls who have never played together come and try to start a new program. For a first year team we played really well and we had great chemistry.”

More than that, the Racers worked together to create a tradition of high expectations for their team.

“No one expected a first year program to get to the conference tournament,” said senior pitcher Chelsey Sullivan. “We did. We knew we were going to get there.”

Now leading the team as upperclassmen, the founding members of the team have always felt a responsibility for creating a team and a program worth being proud of. In fact, having that opportunity is why they chose Murray State.

“For me, it was really exciting, and when I came here and saw how excited everyone else was about starting a program that made it even better,” Glosser said. “We had the opportunity to set goals and standards for a whole new team.

“It was a little overwhelming because we’ve seen teams start up programs and have a losing season. We knew what we wanted to do with the season and what we wanted to accomplish. It was just a matter of putting in the work.”

Now that their tenure with Murray State is coming to a close, Glosser and Sullivan are proud of what they’ve helped their team accomplish and see big things in Murray State’s future.

“Preseason polls may have been right,” Sullivan said of the team slated to finish seventh in preseason rankings. “We lost some big hitters and key players, but we weren’t happy with where they thought we would be. We knew we were better than that and we’re out here proving it every day.”

The Racers play their next home games this weekend with a double-header against Morehead State at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Saturday and a 1 p.m. game Sunday.
