BENTON, Ky. – A veteran who was buried in western Kentucky has received a military headstone noting his service.

Pvt. Joseph Stringer served in the War of 1812 with a unit of the Tennessee Militia, according to The Paducah Sun. Several people gathered Saturday in Marshall County as the new marker was place at his grave. An old headstone had broken.

One of his relatives, Megan Branon of Sharpe, requested the marker, saying she thinks that it is “important to honor all veterans.”

Branon said she found out about Stringer’s life while doing genealogical research.
